What I Learned About Health Insurance From the HR Side
For a long time, health insurance was something I knew existed, but I never really understood it properly.
Like many people, I had heard the usual things.
Insurance companies do not pay.
If you never claim, your premium is wasted.
Corporate insurance should be enough.
My thinking changed when I started looking more closely at medical costs and later became involved in employee health insurance from the HR side.
The biggest lesson was simple.
Health insurance is not about getting your premium back. It is about protecting your savings when something expensive and unexpected happens.
A hospital bill does not care about your financial plans
Most people are saving for something.
A home.
Education.
Family responsibilities.
Travel.
Retirement.
Or simply building financial security.
A major hospitalisation can disturb those plans very quickly.
That changed the way I looked at insurance.
Instead of asking:
“What if I keep paying and never claim?”
I started asking:
“What happens if a hospital bill of several lakhs arrives tomorrow?”
That is a very different question.
Corporate insurance is valuable, but understand what you have
Employer provided medical insurance can be extremely useful.
But employees often know very little about their own coverage.
What is the sum insured?
Who in the family is covered?
Which hospitals are in the network?
Who should you contact during a claim?
Is there a room rent limit?
Is there a copay?
What are the waiting periods?
These are things worth knowing before there is an emergency.
You do not need to memorise the entire policy document.
But you should understand the parts that can materially affect you.
Your family should also know where the policy information is stored.
Corporate cover should not be your only plan
One important thing to remember is that corporate insurance is connected to your employment.
Jobs change.
Employers change.
Benefits can change.
Coverage may also be lower than what you or your family may eventually require.
That is why I see personal health insurance as a separate layer of protection.
Your corporate policy can support you while you are employed.
Your personal policy stays with you independently.
HR also has a role in making insurance easier to understand
Insurance can be confusing.
Employees may receive a policy card or an email but still have no idea how the benefit actually works.
The role of HR is to make sure employees understand the benefit, know where to get the right information and can access expert support when required.
That can sometimes be more valuable than simply increasing the coverage amount.
What if I never use it?
That is actually a good outcome.
The goal is not to make enough claims to recover the premium.
The goal is to stay healthy.
Insurance exists so that if something serious does happen, a medical emergency does not immediately become a financial emergency too.
That was probably the biggest change in my own thinking.
Health insurance stopped looking like an expense I hoped to recover.
It started looking like protection for my savings, my choices and my family.
